Who is Sherri Papini?

If you know the 2016 kidnapping hoax, then you know Sherri Papini. At the time, she was a 34-year-old wife and mother living in California. She disappeared while on a jog in November 2016 and reappeared on Thanksgiving Day. Sherri claimed she had been freed from her captors, and originally said they were two women. But, as the investigation began, Sherri’s tale raised suspicions. Vague recollections and changing details led authorities to wonder if what Papini was saying was true.  

What happened with her case?

As police continued looking into the case, new evidence came to light. Oxygen reported in 2020 that DNA from Sherri’s ex-boyfriend, James Reyes was found. He confirmed that Sherri was with him during the time of her alleged abduction. This led to her arrest on March 3, 2022. The charges were making false statements to FBI agents and mail fraud.

She was released from jail on bond on March 9, 2022. Six weeks after her arrest, Sherri took a plea deal and admitted to orchestrating the hoax. Papini received 18 months in jail. She also had to pay $300,000 in September 2022, per NBC News

According to KRON4, Sherri began serving her sentence in November 2022. She is currently in a medium security federal prison in California.

What about her husband and children?

In April 2022, Keith filed for divorce and for sole custody of their two children, per PEOPLE. 

He keeps out of the media spotlight now. Oxygen reported that his focus is on raising his kids, and they reside in Mountain Gate, California. It’s unknown if they visit Sherri in prison. Although, it seems like Keith does not have any contact with her right now. 

Sherri Papini has not remarried.
