There is nothing quite like the magic of watching a beloved book come to life on screen, and Great American Family’s upcoming movie, Meet Me in the Margins, promises to deliver all the wit, romance, and charm that fans have been craving. We recently sat down with the incredibly talented Merritt Patterson to chat all about her experience stepping into the bustling world of book publishing for her role as Savannah. From navigating playful on-set dynamics to keeping her skin looking absolutely radiant during busy filming schedules, Merritt gives us an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at her life on and off camera. We are so incredibly excited for Meet Me in the Margins! What originally drew you to the role of Savannah, and how did it feel to dive into the world of book publishing for this character?
Merritt Patterson: One of the things I was most excited about was getting to read Melissa Ferguson’s novel before diving into the script. It was such a treat to experience the original story first and gain a deeper understanding of the characters and their journeys. With any adaptation, certain elements inevitably have to be condensed or left out in order for the story to work as a film. Because of that, I was grateful to have a fuller picture of Savannah—her goals, her flaws, what motivates her—and to bring as much of that into my portrayal of her on screen. At her core, Savannah is chasing a dream and hoping to find success in something she’s truly passionate about, but she’s afraid of failure and rejection. That’s something I think so many people can relate to, and one of the reasons I connected with her.
You are starring opposite Liam McIntyre in this film. What was the dynamic like on set working with him to bring this sweet, witty “secret manuscript” romance to life?
Merritt Patterson: Interestingly, because so much of the story revolves around a secret manuscript and, therefore an anonymous editor, I actually filmed many scenes on my own with the manuscript. It was a unique experience, since so much of Savannah’s journey is happening internally through those exchanges. Of course, there were also some standout moments from the novel that were especially fun to bring to life with Liam! Including Savannah and William’s meet-cute. Any day I got to work opposite Liam was a treat. One of my favorite aspects of their relationship is that neither character quite knows how to interact with the other at first, which creates so many fun, awkward, and charming moments between them.
You always look absolutely radiant on screen. What does your daily skincare routine look like, and do you have a holy grail skincare tip or ingredient you swear by?
Merritt Patterson: Thank you! I feel like my skincare routine is constantly evolving based on the season, where I am, how much I’m traveling, age/etc. That being said, there are a handful of products I’ve consistently come back to and absolutely love.
