What is Emancipation About?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Emancipation tells the triumphant story of Peter (Will Smith), a man who escapes from slavery, relying on his wits, unwavering faith and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Will Smith film is inspired by true events. It is based around the 1863 photos of \u201cWhipped Peter,\u201d taken during a Union Army medical examination. The image called “The Scourged Back” was one image that truly inspired it. The image depicts Peter’s bare back mutilated by a whipping delivered by enslavers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
